What is a microlight (ULM) and why is it one of the best ways to start flying?

A gateway to the world of aviation

For many people, learning to fly seems like something reserved for professional pilots or those who have been linked to the aeronautical world all their lives. However, there are different ways to approach sports aviation.

One of them is ultralights, commonly known as ULM.

ULMs make it possible to enjoy flying in an affordable way and offer a direct and exciting experience. From initial training to recreational flights, piloting an ultralight allows you to discover the sky from a completely different perspective.

What exactly is a ULM?

An ultralight is a light aircraft with one or two seats that comes in various configurations, such as airplanes, autogyros, helicopters, or pendulum aircraft.

Although ULM aircraft were associated for a long time with small aircraft of simple structure, the sector has evolved considerably.

Current models can incorporate advanced materials, digital navigation systems, and modern engines that offer amazing performance.

From the first ultralights to today's aircraft

The first ultralights that popularized this modality during the 1980s were simple aircraft, many of them built with tube and fabric structures.

Those aircraft were fundamental in developing sport aviation and bringing flight closer to thousands of enthusiasts.

With the development of new materials and technologies, third and fourth generation ULMs appeared.

Currently we can find aircraft manufactured with aluminum, fiberglass, or carbon, equipped with four-stroke engines, digital navigation systems, and even autopilot.

Amazing performance

Some modern models can exceed 200 km/h in cruising speed and offer ranges of over 1,000 kilometers.

This means that a modern microlight is not simply a small aircraft for short flights around an airfield.

With proper training and always respecting regulations and operating conditions, these aircraft allow you to make real journeys and discover new places from the air.

An accessible way to enjoy aviation

One of the main advantages of microlights is that they allow access to sports aviation with more contained costs than other modalities.

Furthermore, there is an extensive network of airfields and airdromes spread across Spain that vastly expands the possibilities for pilots.

Learn to fly

The first step is always to receive proper training.

At the Guadalajara Aeroclub Flight School, you can train as an ULM pilot in the MAF category, combining theoretical knowledge and flight practice under the supervision of experienced instructors.

Because learning to fly is not just about operating an aircraft. It also means understanding airspace, meteorology, navigation, communications, and, above all, learning to fly safely.
